OUR CURRENT PROJECTS

PB-Active

Our PB-Active pilot project is our work in partnership wih the NHS at the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital. We deliver exercise therapy to children on and off treatment both on the Piam Brown Ward and off-site at our gym location in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Phase 1 – at the Piam Brown Ward

We are working closely with a Paediatric Oncologist at Southampton General Hospital to support children and young people with cancer to participate in exercise and physical activity.

The project facilitates two exercise professionals to visit the Piam Brown ward on a weekly basis to deliver individualised exercise sessions to children admitted to the hospital for treatment or attending the ward as day patients

Participating in regular physical activity when having cancer treatment may help young people to manage the side effects associated with their treatment and make their overall quality of life better, as recent studies have proved that being active has a very positive impact on patient recovery and should be encouraged.

We started delivering this phase of the project in January 2024.

Phase 2 – off-site delivery in a non clinical environment

The second phase of this pilot project is to deliver our exercise therapy sessions outside of the hospital environment. This provides both patients and parents with a more relaxed non-clinical environment to attend.

What we do and who we work with on this basis:

Children on treatment:

  • We deliver individualised exercise sessions to children undergoing cancer treatment on an outpatient basis

  • We provide personalised assessment and goal setting for children to work towards, as well as developing and delivering personalised exercise programmes to help children maintain and improve their strength and physical fitness.

Children off treatment:

  • We deliver individualised exercise sessions and personalised programmes to children who have completed treatment for cancer, aiming to help them regain their strength and fitness to enjoy life again.
  • We conduct an Initial assessment and consultation session, set goals for children to work towards, develop and deliver personalised exercise programmes in-person on a 1-2-1 basis to help children regain their strength and physical fitness.

This will help children get back to doing activities they loved, or discover new ways of moving/being active once they have completed their cancer treatment.

We began delivering phase 2 of this project in June 2024

What One Day of Support Makes Possible

What One Day of Support Makes Possible

The trolley was loaded with workout equipment and the short road trip to a new hospital had begun. This might seem like the start, but in reality, it was the outcome of months of planning and the beginning of a new project we are so proud to see underway. December...

‘Life changing’

Is the phrase most commonly used by our beneficiaries, parents and medical staff when describing our exercise therapy service

“I cannot express how happy it has made me seeing my son smile and excited for his future. Even as I write this I know it’s not enough to explain just how happy he was when he came home”

– Parent of child receiving exercise therapy

“I’ve noticed a huge difference in my endurance. Now I can do things I love more easily. Thank you so much.”

– Child receiving exercise therapy

Project:PB-Active

We help children and young people battling cancer.

Project:PB-Active is delivered in partnership with the NHS at the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital and at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth Some sessions take place on the ward and others take place in our gym location in Eastleigh.

Every session is focused on helping children get back to doing what they love and rebuilding the confidence they need to do it.

Phase 1

– On the Ward

Cancer care is invasive and exhausting. Children often spend hours bedbound during treatment.

This phase of PB-Active brings two exercise professionals onto the ward to deliver fun, tailored exercise therapy sessions to children in hospital.

For some, the sessions are the only chance they get to be active that day.

Even small amounts of movement can help improve mood, maintain physical function and give children back a sense of control during treatment.

Phase 2

– At our Gym

Our second phase gives children the opportunity to experience exercise outside a clinical environment.

Some are still undergoing treatment.

Others have completed theirs.

Every session is tailored to the individual child and their goals.

We help children rebuild the confidence they need to return to the activities they loved and discover new ways to be active.

The difference it makes

Parents see their children be themselves again.

Six-year-olds rediscover play through movement after treatment.

Teenagers return to activities and sports they loved without exhaustion.

PB-Active rebuilds strength, confidence and hope.

Not just for children, for the people who care for them as well.

The programme

We begin with an initial assessment involving the child and their parent or guardian.

Each exercise therapy plan is then tailored to the child and their goals.

Sessions are delivered one-to-one by trained exercise therapists.

Strength, endurance and mobility are tracked across the programme to show clear progress.

“My exercise therapist was a great coach and an even nicer person.”
